Abstract |
However is the real number of Roma population (in estimations between 5 and 10 millions), we can meet them anywhere in Europe . Most of them live in Central and East Europe as one of the most disprivileged minorities. This work is a research summary presenting results of a pre-study aiming estimate drug use related HIV-risk among Gypsies living in Central-East Europe. Most of Roma communities are affected in injection drug use in more parts of this region. According to experts from different countries, Roma population is much more affected in drug problem than not Gypsies. Some factors refer increased level of HIV-risk among Gypsy drug users including barriers of needle cleaning and reaching health and social services. Drug addiction has a very strong influence on family bonds and traditional norms of solidarity and reciprocity. More and more Gypsy drug users become homeless. Beside this fact, researches indicate that by increasing social problems in the community, drug addiction, HIV infection and other drug related harms affect outcast minorities more than average. Roma leaders, governments and the EU have to do significant steps to strengthen and develop communities against drug addiction and related harms. |
